Ombre Slush

Something refreshing for the bored kids and all the kids at heart today. We can't have a slushie maker at home and have that perfect slushie we enjoy at a posh mall or outlet. But aren't the homemade ones of all those branded items tastier and healthier? May be we can't get that perfect look or texture at times. Nevertheless they are a perfect alternative.

Slush, slushy / slushee /slushie is basically flavoured ice-a frozen ice and sugary beverage that come in many different flavors . You eat up the ice crystals with a spoon or drink it with a straw.( You then called it a slurpy/slurpee. The sound you make when you drink it through a straw.)

Basically a slush is made with crushed ice , a mixture of sugar and water. To prevent the solution from freezing solid, a right ratio of sugar and water is used . The sugar checks the solution from freezing. Also, the slush machine rotates the mixture at a constant speed so that the sugar and water molecules bond together before the water gets a chance to freeze forming a soft, slurry mixture .

What you have here today is a much varied attempt. The frozen ice at home could taste watery. So instead of blending a flavour with the ice crystal, I have pureed fruits here to get a slush that tastes as good. I have also turned it as healthy by using brown sugar for the syrup and not sieving the fruit puree after blending so that the fibre isn't discarded.

You may have a plain flavoured slush or try a few ombre combinations or even a rainbow slush.Try adding fruit concentrates for flavour and colour or add fruit purees. Try various combination like orange and lemon, blueberry and watermelon, mango and watermelon , lemon and pink guava and many more to get those lovely ombre slushes.

Make frozen ice with any two fruits.

Freeze fruits, blend them with fruit concentrate/simple syrup/honey. Add a tinge of lemon or orange flavour. (Refer the sorbet recipes on the blog for details)

Arrange them immediately in transparent serving glasses and relish . Or ( optionally sieve the liquid and) freeze them for an hour or two. The solution crystallises by then. Scrape it out with a fork, or a spoon or crush it in a blender.

Arrange layers of the solution.

Level at the rim or scoop it up as high as you can.

Sip it up slowly and relish the flavours. You don't need any garnishing . I am just using up all that watermelon tutti frutti coz I so loved them and can't wait to gobble them all up make the next batch.

Enjoy the seasonal fruits and stay healthy.
