Onion Rings

Writer's picture: Samily#TheAmateurChef#Samily#TheAmateurChef#

This is my first attempt at it. So, I haven't tried to healthify the recipe. It has become quite a popular snack/starter and I wanted to try it out. Next time perhaps, I can try replacing the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour and bake or air-fry instead of deep frying. That should fix it. 😍

Cooking time : 10 mins

Preparation time : 20 mins

Course : appetiser / snack

Makes 30

Ingredients :

Onions : 2 large

All purpose flour : 3/4 cup

Corn flour : ¼ cup

Baking powder : ½ tsp

Salt : 1 tsp

Garlic powder : 1 tsp

Black pepper powder : ½ tsp

Red chilly powder : 2 tsps

Chilli flakes : 1 tsp

Bread crumbs : 2 cups

Oil : 2 cups

Recipe:

Cut the onions into ¼ inch cross sectional circular slices.

Separate the rings.

The rings will be of various sizes.

You may keep aside the small ones to use it in some other recipe for the day or garnish your dish. The medium and big ones may be used for onion rings.

In a bowl take all purpose flour; add corn flour , baking powder , salt, garlic powder , pepper powder, red chilli powder, chilli flakes and mix well .

You may use garlic/ginger-garlic paste if you don’t have garlic powder.

Cayenne gives it the authentic flavour. As I don’t have it, I am using chilli powder to balance the spice quotient.

Get the bread crumbs ready in a bowl. You may prefer to make them at home as well. I have used here crumbs made from 4 slices of brown bread. Just cut the bread slices, put them in a mixer jar and grind them for 20-30 seconds. You will have the crumbs ready . You may even toast the bread before grinding.

Take the cut rings, coat them in this dry mixture and set them aside.(This step is optional.)

Now, adding water slowly make a smooth, slightly thick batter of of the dry mix taking care to avoid lumps.

Dip and coat the rings in the batter.

Drain the excess batter.

Coat them in bread crumbs.

Get all the rings ready one by one.

You may give a double coating if you prefer. For that, just dip the rings once again in the batter and coat them again with bread crumbs.

Leave the rings in the refrigerator for 30-minutes to 2 hours. You may even store them in ziplock bags in your freezer to fry whenever required.

You may fry them immediately if you want to. Leaving them to set in the freezer helps make them crispier.

Heat oil in a wok.

Drop a few coated rings at a time and fry on both the sides.

Takes hardly 1-2 minutes for them to be ready.

When done on both the sides take them out with a skewer and place them on an absorbent paper .

Your onion rings are ready to be served now.Sprinkle with salt(Optional)

Serve them with ketchup or mayonnaise. And your favourite cuppa hot or cold.

Happy cooking ! 🍽
